Map Kibera

Participatory community mapping initiative that turned Kibera (one of the largest informal settlements in Nairobi) from a blank space on OpenStreetMap into a detailed, open digital map.

01 The context

Young residents were trained to collect geospatial data with GPS and mobile phones, edit it in OSM and produce information on schools, water, sanitation, safety, street lighting and health. It includes Voice of Kibera (SMS/Ushahidi reports) and Kibera News Network (citizen video).
