UrbanFarmers De Schilde
Description
Urban aquaponics farm built in 2016 on the rooftop of the former Philips De Schilde building in The Hague, operated by the Swiss company UrbanFarmers. It combined a ~1,200 m2 greenhouse with a tilapia fish farm connected through aquaponics; it was Europe's largest commercial rooftop farm. With an investment of ~2.7 million EUR, it never reached economic viability. After the bankruptcy of the Swiss parent company, the Court of The Hague declared UF De Schilde B.V. bankrupt on 3 July 2018.
Lessons learned
A model that looks attractive on paper is not enough: large-scale urban aquaponics failed because of (1) yields far below conventional cultivation in the first seasons, (2) overly innovative technology that required highly qualified and scarce staff, high energy consumption and difficult rooftop access, and (3) a failed B2B commercial strategy, aggravated by the bankruptcy of the Swiss parent company. The central lesson: high-tech urban agriculture requires an economically viable business model, not just technical capability.
