Mobile health wallet and health financing platform built on M-PESA: it allows people to save, borrow and receive earmarked subsidies for spending exclusively within a national network of health providers, connecting patients, providers and payers in near real time.

01 The context
Launched by CarePay with Safaricom, PharmAccess and UAP (M-TIBA started as a brand in Kenya around 2015; public launch with Safaricom in December 2016). More than 4.8 million users; universal health coverage (UHC) pilot in Kisumu 2018-2019 with 273,350 households enrolled. Since 2024-2025 it incorporates AI for claims review.
