01 The context
It secures government occupational identity cards for waste pickers, integrates them into the municipal system and operates dozens of Dry Waste Collection Centres (DWCC) run by waste picker-entrepreneurs (85+ DWCCs). A study with WIEGO calculated the CO2 emissions avoided by the DWCCs. In 2015 it spun off Hasiru Dala Innovations, a 'for-purpose' inclusive circularity company co-founded by Nalini Shekar and Marwan Abubaker, with Shekar Prabhakar as CEO.
