Description

A participatory process in the Chinantec municipality of San José Chiltepec, Oaxaca, through which ejido and municipal authorities, local leaders and young people formed a community committee to address the contamination of surface water sources and the drinking water supply. The committee designed internal regulations for the sanitation of water sources, validated by the community assembly. Accompanied by EcoLogic Development Fund and the Fondo Ambiental Regional de la Chinantla.

Lessons learned

The study warns that community participation alone is not enough: the committee requires capacity building and sustained institutional accompaniment to achieve continuity and scale to the regional level.
