Highly standardized model: scripted lessons delivered to teachers via tablets, daily monitoring and centralized management. It operates in 30 of the 47 counties. A lottery-based RCT (~10,000 scholarship recipients out of ~25,000 applicants; Gray-Lobe, Keats, Kremer, Mbiti and Ozier) found gains among the largest in the literature (0.89 extra equivalent years in primary, 1.48 in pre-primary), although civil society organizations question the model and its labor conditions.M-Shule (adaptive learning via SMS)Kenyan platform founded in Nairobi in 2017 by Claire Mongeau and Julie Otieno that delivers personalized micro-lessons in mathematics, English and skills via SMS and chatbots, using AI-powered adaptive learning. Designed for households without a smartphone: a basic phone is enough. It has reached ~20,000-23,000 students/households in ~30 counties; studies report learning gains that are equitable across gender and location. M-Shule means mobile school in Kiswahili.Kio Kit (BRCK Education)A digital classroom in a box designed and manufactured in Kenya by BRCK: a rugged case with 40 shockproof Kio tablets, wireless/solar charging and a local server with offline curricular content, for schools without reliable electricity or internet. Launched in 2015, it was deployed in several countries and won design awards. BRCK set it aside around 2017-2018 and today the company focuses on voice infrastructure; the education product no longer exists.
