Home-Based Newborn Care (SEARCH Gadchiroli)

Description

Home-based newborn care model created by SEARCH in the tribal district of Gadchiroli, Maharashtra. Trained community health workers (arogyadoots) make home visits to care for the newborn, manage neonatal sepsis and educate mothers. The field trial published in The Lancet (Bang et al. 1999) covered 1993-1998 and showed a ~62% reduction in neonatal mortality; the ten-year follow-up (1993-2003) confirmed the effect. The Government of India adopted it as the basis of the national HBNC program (2011) and WHO/UNICEF took it to other low- and middle-income countries.
