Trained community health workers (arogyadoots) make home visits to care for the newborn, manage neonatal sepsis and educate mothers. The field trial published in The Lancet (Bang et al. 1999) covered 1993-1998 and showed a ~62% reduction in neonatal mortality; the ten-year follow-up (1993-2003) confirmed the effect.
