SWaCH Pune (Solid Waste Collection and Handling cooperative)
Cooperative owned by self-employed informal waste pickers in Pune, Maharashtra. Emerging from the KKPKP union (founded 1993), SWaCH began as a pilot in 2005 and was formally registered as a workers' cooperative in 2008 to institutionalize door-to-door collection.

01 The context
It provides collection and at-source segregation under contract with the Pune Municipal Corporation. Recovered materials are reintegrated into recycling chains, formalizing waste pickers as service providers with wages, protective equipment and an occupational identity. It is the largest waste picker-led cooperative in the world.
