BURN Manufacturing Jikokoa clean cookstoves

BURN Manufacturing designs and locally manufactures efficient cookstoves (flagship: the charcoal-burning Jikokoa) in a solar-powered factory near Nairobi, which opened its vertically integrated plant in 2014, the first modern one of its kind in the region.

01 The context

The Jikokoa uses far less charcoal than the traditional ceramic jiko. Distribution combines retail, credit sales and prices subsidized with carbon finance. An independent RCT with 1,000 households in Nairobi (Berkouwer & Dean, AER 2022) validated the efficiency and welfare gains.
