Efficient wood-burning stoves (Fundación Natura)Program replacing open fires with improved-combustion wood stoves (FN model) in rural areas of Antioquia, Santander and Norte de Santander. Fundación Natura installed around 2.000 stoves in Antioquia and Santander (starting December 2013, 30 months) and some 1.350 in municipalities of Norte de Santander, with locally sourced materials and training for the families. Each stove reduces firewood consumption by up to 35% and lowers exposure to indoor smoke. The work led to a methodological guide with Gold Standard criteria and to inputs for the roadmap of a national NAMA for improved stoves; Natura is a member of the Mesa Nacional de Estufas Eficientes and reports more than 4.000 stoves in the Andean region.Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) - access to LPG for clean cookingPMUY is a flagship program of the government of India launched in 2016 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to provide access to LPG as a clean cooking fuel for marginalized households, delivering subsidized connections in the name of women from below-poverty-line families. It seeks to reduce indoor air pollution from solid fuels. Evaluations report improvements in health and women's empowerment, but also barriers: sustained LPG use is limited to brief cooking and the cost of refills restricts continuous use.BURN Manufacturing Jikokoa clean cookstovesBURN Manufacturing designs and locally manufactures efficient cookstoves (flagship: the charcoal-burning Jikokoa) in a solar-powered factory near Nairobi, which opened its vertically integrated plant in 2014, the first modern one of its kind in the region. The Jikokoa uses far less charcoal than the traditional ceramic jiko. Distribution combines retail, credit sales and prices subsidized with carbon finance. An independent RCT with 1,000 households in Nairobi (Berkouwer & Dean, AER 2022) validated the efficiency and welfare gains.Coöperatie ZeeuwindCitizen wind energy cooperative in the province of Zeeland, founded in 1987 by Zeelanders opposed to nuclear power. It started with the Bath wind farm and today (co-)owns 13 wind farms with 73 turbines in Zeeland, as well as solar parks. It has more than 3.000 members who contribute capital and receive returns, with the energy generated locally and profits reinvested in the province. It is one of the oldest and most resilient energy cooperatives in the Netherlands and the main subject of an academic study on the survival of community initiatives.Windpark KrammerThe largest citizen cooperative wind farm in the Netherlands, developed by the Deltawind and Zeeuwind cooperatives on the Krammer locks, between three Natura 2000 areas. It consists of 34 Enercon E-115 turbines (102 MW), operational since 2019 and inaugurated by King Willem-Alexander in May 2019, financed by more than 4.000 members and corporate PPA buyers (Google, AkzoNobel, DSM, Philips). The cooperatives own 60% and Kallista Energy 40% since 2021. It includes the DTBird system, which stops turbines when a protected bird approaches. A windfonds redistributes profits to the community.GridFlex HeetenLocal energy market pilot in the Veldegge neighborhood of Heeten (Overijssel), where 48 households tested for the first time salt batteries (Dr Ten) combined with solar panels and dynamic pricing. A consortium (Endona, Enexis/Enpuls, Escozon, University of Twente, ICT Group, Dr Ten, Buurkracht) designed a market where energy is generated, stored, traded and consumed locally. Endona obtained an exemption from the Electricity Act to experiment. The study showed that grid peaks were reduced by up to 36% with savings for the community.
